Yerba Mate

Mate, also known as Yerba Mate, is a traditional South American high-caffeine drink with a strong and bitter taste, prepared with yerba mate leaves. This drink, consumed hot or cold, is drunk in a gourd using a metal tube which also serves as a filter, called "la bombilla".

Once the hot water is added, the herb infuses and the mate can be drunk and the gourd can be refilled many more times.

Along with tea and coffee, mate is one of the top three most consumed caffeinated beverages in the world .

The name “mate” comes from Spanish and means “gourd”, an allusion to the small gourd in which the drink is served in South America. With the infusion of mate , lemon juice or milk and sugar are sometimes added. Mate is also served with a straw, generally metal, fitted with a filter at the base, which helps avoid swallowing the dried leaf powder which rests at the bottom of the small gourd. In Paraguay and Uruguay, its consumption as daily stimulant is more widespread than that of coffee or tea.

Infusion: Once hot water is added, the herb infuses and the mate can be drunk and the calabash can be refilled with water many times.
